I Got My First Bonsai Tree! The Crown Of Thorns
I’m so excited about my first bonsai tree. As far as I know, there are only two colors for
the Crown Of Thorns plant, yellow and red. I got myself the yellow one.
My first bonsai stands about 1 foot tall from its feet to the top of its head. I love it!
These grow as shrubs in Sarasota Florida where my brother lives. When I saw them for the first time being spotlighted at RV resorts I was amazed at their beauty.
My new crown of thorns bonsai tree When I got this in the mail it was packaged for the possibility of catastrophe. Not one little stone was out of place when I got my bonsai tree.
This image shows straight down the main stem. When they cut the top part off it stunted its growth and forced new branches below the cut. My little bonsai has lived in a little pot for 9 years with wires all around here and there to train (curate) it into what you see today.

When I first got my bonsai tree I was concerned about the flowers already on the tree. They looked weak and dying, but the tree looked healthy. So I gave my new friend and new hobby a soft spray drink of cool water all over the leaves and through the stones and out the bottom. Then I just hoped for the best. I’m full up on hope!
After two days of looking at it every time I went by it, I could certainly see some improvement. The above image shows new flowers (they look white but they are pastel yellow). Also, note the new growth of green on the tips, it’s starting to come into its own. I think for indoor bonsai trees it is best to buy them in the late winter into the beginning of spring because you will get the full benefit from the new growth in the spring. Just like your outdoor shrubs “it will let you know when it’s springtime”.

I thought I would show you the flowers of this little 9-year-old Crown of Thorns Bonsai Tree. Sorry for the images best I could do. But take it from me they are beautiful. And they get a wet looking substance in the center of the flower. Their stems are full of cactus milk so don’t prune them all at one time. I guess they could Bleed Out.
Everything that’s growing in my yard I look at as a possible bonsai tree. I have been working on a Red Maple that just grew because some bird planted it there. But that is another post.
